Mrs. Antina Rhonell Thomas Sowell, daughter of Zura Lean Ingram Thomas and the late Henry Max Thomas was born on January 5, 1973 in Union County and departed this life on April 1, 2021 at Atrium Health in Monroe, NC.
In her early years, Antina became a member of the Piney Grove United Church of God. She also became part of a well-known singing trio called “The Thomas Sisters,” singing gospel and stage music. She along with her two sisters, Antionette and lead singer Iesha, traveled extensively in and out of the state singing at various venues. Their singing experiences allowed them to participate in a special on campus training program at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where they received formal voice training. Upon graduation from Anson Senior High School, Antina attended the Georgia Military Academy as a cadet.
She later met and married Mr. John Ray Sowell who preceded her in death. To this union one child was born, Thelma Renee Sowell. She operated a variety store while still in Anson. After moving to Norwich, Connecticutt, Antina worked for several years as a Home Healthcare Assistant. Health issues later brought her back to Anson County, North Carolina.
Antina had an extremely pleasing, outgoing personality with an infectious smile and laugh. After she greeted you, usually there would be outstretched arms to hug you as well. Rarely did she miss the opportunity to say in parting, “ I love you”.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Thelma Renee, one sister, Ms. Iesha Thomas, Charlotte,NC, one brother, Mr. Max Omar Thomas, Charlotte,NC, one niece, Chelsea Thomas, two nephews, Landon and Amarie Thomas and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
