Eleanor Parker Obituary

Eleanor Marie Long was born in New Bern, North Carolina on September 1, 1941. While in North Carolina she lived and was cared for by family friend, Ms. Jessie Duffy. When she was 8 years old, Eleanor relocated to Brooklyn, NY where she was reunited with her mother, Ernestine Long Duffy. As a young child Eleanor enjoyed going to church and singing in various choirs. She even had the opportunity to sing on the radio and lead her choir in a rendition of “Calling Jesus My Rock”.

Eleanor attended Sara J. Hale H.S. and explored various interests and jobs to help support her family. While a teenager, Eleanor met and married her sweetheart, James Parker on August 18, 1958.

In 1979 when her children were old enough, she returned to the workforce full-time and secured a position at the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development. During her career at HPD she held various administrative and supervisory positions. Eleanor retired from HPD in October 2002 after 23 years of service and relocated to Concord, NC until her passing.

What everyone remembers most was Eleanor’s smile, her love for music, singing, dancing and her excellent cooking skills.

Eleanor leaves to mourn, her beloved husband James Parker of 62 years; children Vannessa Parker (Tim McFadden), Gregory (Mitzi Smith) Parker and Sabrina Parker (sons Kelvin {daughter in-law Margie Martin} Parker & Lamont Parker, preceded her in death); grandchildren, Tovonna Lee (Ryan Burris), Kelvin (Shanique Edwards) Parker.
