Mrs. Fulta Mae Knotts Hilliard was born April 1, 1935 in Monroe, NC to the late Fulton and Bessie Kilgo Knotts. She departed this life July 10, 2022 at her home with her loving husband and daughter by her side.
She was a proud Buffalo of Winchester Avenue High School, graduating in 1951 as valedictorian. She furthered her education at Barber Scotia College and received her MS in education from Buffalo State University. She enjoyed teaching Special Education Math for over 30 years at South Park High School in Buffalo, NY. She authored two books, All About Fractions.
Fulta Mae was very active in her church and community as long as her health permitted. While residing in Buffalo she was a member of Second Temple Baptist Church, serving as secretary of the Finance Department. Upon returning to Monroe in 2000, she reunited with Black’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, participating in many auxiliaries and supporting the church in any way possible. She was an active member of the Winchester Community Organization serving as secretary.
Ma, as she was affectionately called by many, was known to always have candy for children at church and in the community, host meals for family and friends and tutor children that needed extra help without charge. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
Ma was predeceased by her parents, her siblings and their spouses: Marie Kilgo, Isom (Ruby) Kilgo, Fred (Bessie) Kilgo, Irene (James) Sessom, Leona (Leon) Simpkins, Nellie (Henry) White, Annie Lee Thompson, and Hattie (Merrill) McIntosh. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years Haywood, devoted daughter Tiffany both of the home, sister Barbara (Julius, D) Cuthbertson of Winston-Salem, NC. Her love extended to several god children and their families, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
