Julia Hoyte Obituary

Julia Mae Hoyte, a woman of unconquerable spirit and a life well-lived, was born on March 25, 1945. She was the sole daughter of the late Martha Jane Drakeford and the late Cleveland Massey. On Sunday, March 1, 2026, Julia peacefully went from labor to reward at the White Oak nursing center in Lancaster, South Carolina, where she was lovingly cared for under Gentiva Hospice.

Julia's journey on this earth was marked by movement, a characteristic captured perfectly by the sentiment that "Julia never let moss grow under her feet." Her roots were in Camden, South Carolina, where she was born. Her formative years were spent amidst the bustling energy of New York, and later, she migrated across the country to the sunny climes of California. In a beautiful demonstration of family devotion, Julia eventually relocated to Lancaster, South Carolina, to care for her cherished, aging parents.

Her pursuit of knowledge led her to excellent educational institutions. She graduated from Central Commercial High School in New York, establishing a strong foundation for her career. Her academic journey continued in California, where she earned her associate's degree from Mt. San Jacinto College.

Julia's professional life was as diverse as her geographical movements, showcasing her adaptability and work ethic. Her resume included handling foreign accounts at the prestigious Chase Manhattan Bank, demonstrating her financial acuteness. She also served others as a certified home health aide, a testament to her compassionate nature. Her passion for cooking found an outlet as a cook at several restaurants. She also contributed to the community through cafeteria work at Harrisburg Middle School. Julia happily concluded her professional chapter when she retired at age 67 from Health South in Rock Hill, South Carolina, having left a positive impact on all her places of employment.

Julia was a devoted member of Greater Blessed Hope Baptist Church, where her faith flourished. Her church family quickly became her own, and she deeply loved her time with them, especially enjoying the choir. She forged a close bond with her pew partner, Sandra Harkness, who became one of her best friends.

Julia's life, filled with transitions and contributions, was not without profound sorrow. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenneth Tay Hoyte, Jr.

Following her retirement, she moved in with her youngest son, Malcolm Hoyte, and his wife, Keyna Hoyte. She filled the Hoyte Home with joy, sharing her delicious cooking, nurturing every plant with her remarkable green thumb, and brightening their days with her infectious laugh.

From 2021 to 2022, Miriam “Bit” Croutch provided loving in-home health care, for which the family is especially grateful. Julia always looked forward to Bit's visits; they enjoyed watching TV, working on crossword puzzles, and, a particular highlight, going shopping. After a decade of living with her son and daughter-in-law, and bravely facing numerous health challenges, she became a resident at White Oak Manor nursing center.

Julia is survived by her loving son, Malcolm Hoyte (Keyna) of Indian Land, South Carolina; her daughter, Lisa Sutton of Delaware; and her daughter-in-law, Kali Hoyte, wife of the late Kenneth Hoyte, Jr. of Oklahoma. She also leaves behind eleven dearly loved grandchildren: India Sutton; Talibah Al Nur, Kenneth Hoyte III, Dometre Mobley (Chardae), William Haywood Jr., Destinay Hoyte, Tiana Haywood, Kyra Hoyte, Timothy Hoyte, Khalil Hoyte, and Kaleb Hoyte, as well as twenty-one adoring great-grandchildren and one grandpup, Choco.

She leaves behind a legacy of strength, versatility, and love, remembered by those whose lives she touched near and far.
