Laurence Arthur Jackman Obituary

Laurence Arthur Jackman passed away June 1, 2026 after a long series of health challenges.
Larry was predeceased by sons Matthew and Michael, ex-wife Lucille and sister Joyce; he is
survived by grandson Tyler, and brothers Gregory (Joanie), Bob, and Arthur (Janie). He was
loved and assisted by his partner, Rosemary Watt, and caretaker, Sherrod Person. Several
other friends also provided critical support during his decline, including Scott Vallandingham,
Marko Jackson, Noah Jackson, Russell Tanner, Jeff Russell, Terry Helms (RIP) and Gary Helms.
Larry was born April 27, 1938 in Massachusetts. He was a gifted athlete (basketball and track &
field) in high school and pursued an education in Metallurgical Engineering from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute that culminated in a PhD.
Larry began his career at Special Metals Corp. in New Hartford, NY where he conducted ground-
breaking research in nickel-base superalloys. In 1986, Larry joined Teledyne Allvac in Monroe,
NC (later, ATI Specialty Materials – ATI SM). He served in several roles, including Chief Materials
Scientist and Vice President of Technology. During this time, Larry developed and introduced
processes that enabled the manufacture of alloys and products that competitors struggled to
replicate, thus establishing ATI SM as the premier supplier of nickel-base superalloys to the jet
engine turbine disk industry. Larry was a skilled engineer and tireless problem solver, gaining
admiration and respect from jet engine manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe, as well as part
forgers around the world. He also served as a valued teacher, mentor and friend to numerous
staff at ATI SM. Larry’s competitiveness and enthusiasm were contagious, creating a
challenging and fun working environment for his employees. After his quasi-retirement in
2008, Larry continued assisting ATI SM as a consultant for 12 additional years. He will be greatly
missed by many loved ones, coworkers and colleagues.
