Mary Alice Gillespie was born in Union County, NC, to Queen Elsie Gillespie (Sturdivant) and the late Walter Floyd Thomas. She entered into eternal rest at home on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Mary (Mert), as we all know her, was funny, vibrant, creative, and full of joy. She was the life of the party, and everyone wanted to go to Mert’s house. Mert worked many years in the poultry industry and later devoted the last 30 years of her career to the healthcare field, providing services to nursing homes throughout Union County. Outside of her work, she found great joy in crafting and crocheting, often creating thoughtful handmade pieces for others. Mert was a faithful member of First Church of God in Marshville, NC, for many years and later joined Wingate Community Church of God, where she continued to walk faithfully in her relationship with the Lord.
